The Moroccan sardine

A top notch authenticity

The Sardina Pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792) is an internationally recognized and well-known species: it is the traditional sardine, some call it the  «real sardine», it is the sardine that our elders have appreciated for many years.

In a highly competitive market, this recognition is due to the Moroccan experts who have spent years of efforts to promote it for consumers.

The Moroccan Sardina Pilchardus is a delicate, nutritious and healthy product. This pelagic species stands out from the crowd thanks to a virtuous expertize.

Authentic and original, its unique taste and its natural flavor are the key arguments that allow it to represent the Moroccan marine area with dignity.

A real gem

The Sardina Pilchardus Walbaum has a very strong economic importance; other countries are trying to associate neighboring species to the sardine name and profit from its commercial reputation to acquire some markets.

As a privileged member of the International Committee of Sardina Pilchardus (CISAP in French, ICSAP in English) that regroups Portugal, Spain and France, Morocco continues to mobilize its resources to defend its authentic sardine in order to slow down the invasion of international markets by “fake” sardines.

In addition, Morocco has always put forward the specific qualities of the Moroccan sardine and the Mediterranean rim, Morocco also started campaigns of promotion and defense of the Moroccan sardina Pilchardus with other European countries to increase awareness of the member countries of the Codex Alimentarius Commission to the cause it defends.

With its scientists and professionals, Morocco has set strict health standards and heavily invested in the development of production tools in order to strengthen its position. Safety tests and procedures have also been developed to preserve its «Sardina Pilchardus Walbaum».
