With more than 3500 km of coastline and more than one million km² of maritime surface, Morocco is located at the confluence of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and holds a rare diversity of marine environments with a wide variety of fish, molluscs, crustaceans and shells.
With more than one million km² of maritime surface, Moroccan coasts figures among the richest areas in fish worldwide. This is first due to its strategic position, which consists of crossroads of water masses defined by different origins and densities, but also to its upwelling zones characterized by deep cold-water lifts that are rich in salts and nutrients.
Morocco also contains continental environments under marine influence, particularly brackish environments including several lagoons, estuaries and bays, which are spawning areas for many species.
The Moroccan fishery includes nearly a hundred species of commercial interest, grouped into six major groups
