The Moroccan policy for the management of the maritime fishing sector keeps maintaining and creating the necessary conditions for a sustainable development through a responsible management of the fishing resources and the preservation of their ecosystems.

Morocco has implemented effective fishing research as a vital tool for the sustainable management of fishing resources.

This fishing research policy is based on a clear and coherent vision that reconciles ecological, economic and social stakes in order to ensure the development and rationalization of the management of the fishing resources and their development.

In addition, Morocco engages in all research activities, studies, experimental actions and offshore or ashore work related to the preservation of the biodiversity of the marine environment, the struggle against overfishing, ensuring the recovery of over-exploited species stocks, the protection of endangered species and the promotion of sustainable fishing practices.

The overall objective of this fishing research approach is to provide all the necessary knowledge and scientific advice for the management of the sector in order to better understand its stakes and provide quality expertise, while giving itself the necessary resources to respond in a timely manner to the expectations of the profession while remaining efficient.

The National Institute of Halieutic Research (INRH in French, NIHR in English) was founded in 1966 and is a major key actor in fishing research in Morocco, it engages in all research activities, studies, experimental actions and offshore or ashore work that has a purpose of development and rationalization of the fishing and aquaculture resources management and their valorization.

To this end, it is responsible for:

  • Evaluating the fishing resources and monitoring their exploitation.
  • Monitoring the quality and safety of the marine environment.
  • Studying the marine and coastal ecosystems functioning.
  • Testing fishing techniques and valorization of seafood products.
  • Research and contribution to the Moroccan aquaculture development.
