The fishmeal industry was founded in Morocco in the 50s in order deal with the waste treatment needs of the canning industry. This also includes the fish that is not industrialized and is repressed in the industrial fish approving counters (CAPI in French, IFAC in English) since it does not meet the freshness, quality and mold criteria.
This industry focuses more and more on producing a valued oil intended for human consumption and a high- protein fishmeal that has been increasingly coveted in the recent years.
STATISTICAL DATA
In 2012, the fishmeal and the fish oil activity has been covered by 25 units. These units, located mainly in Laayoune and Tan Tan, produced 65,596 tons of fishmeal and 17,890 tons of fish oil.
The fishmeal and the fish oil are intended for supplying the aviculture local market as well as the international farming and aquaculture market since they are very demanding of the animal proteins.
Three companies have specialized in the production of fish oil for human consumption.
